Description
Epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, is a hormone that plays an important role in the body’s fight-or-flight response and is also used as a medication. It is commonly used in emergency medicine to treat severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) and cardiac arrest. Epinephrine works by constricting blood vessels, increasing heart rate, and widening airways, thereby improving blood flow and respiratory function. It can be given by injection, such as an auto-injector (EpiPen). Because of its rapid onset of action, epinephrine is essential in acute medical situations, but its use must be monitored to avoid possible side effects.
